Dit is een heel mooi voorbeeld van een manifest.
In dit manifest beschrijft Jan Tschichold tot in het exacte hoe het Penquin boekje gemaakt moest worden, zodat er niks meer mis kon gaan bij de drukker.

In het eerste gedeelte van de tekst wordt er aangegeven hoe de compositie van de tekst moet zijn.
Als ik eerlijk moet zijn lees ik dit met heel veel moeite, grotendeels omdat ik nog niet bekent ben met vele termen. Hiervoor moest ik dus ook veel opzoeken.
Zoals;

Em
Defenitie:
" An em is a unit of measurement in the field of typography, equal to the point size of the current font. This unit is not defined in terms of any specific typeface, and thus is the same for all fonts at a given point size. So, one em in a 16 point typeface is 16 points. "

Omit
Defenitie:
" The verb omit comes from the Latin word omittere, "to let go or to lay aside," which is exactly what it means. When you omit an ingredient you need for your brownie recipe from the grocery list, you've accidentally left off an important item. You can also deliberately omit something, which you'd do if you didn't include your least favorite cousin when you invited your relatives to a family reunion."

Quad
Defenitie:
"In typography, a quad (originally quadrat[1]) was a metal spacer used in letterpress typesetting. The term was later adopted as the generic name for two common sizes of spaces in typography, regardless of the form of typesetting used. An em quad is a space that is one em wide; as wide as the height of the font. An en quad is a space that is one en wide: half the width of an em quad."

Vervolgens gaat het over de opmaak van het boek zelf. Wat ik hier knap aan vind is dat Jan Tschichold heel erg specifiek is en weet wat hij wilt. Zelf zou ik hier een beetje gek van worden, het lezen van de tekst alleen al maakte me een beetje duizelig, maar tevens vond ik het ook interessant.
